Version 1.1 Update

This is a quality of life update to Mechrocosm, after a couple weeks of work. While we were proud of what we were able to accomplish with the version of the game that was submitted to GMTK, there were a number of things we wished we could have made it in to the game that we didn't have time to finish, as well as things we realized could be improved after release. This update addresses everything we wanted to change or improve.

New content:

  • Added a save system so the game doesn't have to be played in one sitting.
  • Added rebindable controls, fullscreen, and vsync options.
  • Improved ending sequence.
  • New credits track that plays after finishing the game.
  • New ending screen by Donovan Dinoff.
  • Options are now accessible from the pause menu.

Gameplay Adjustments:

  • Most rooms inside the mech have been adjusted in some way to add more visual and gameplay variety and to remove an unintended softlock.
  • Added a border around the mech rooms to both add more interesting visual flair and to make it more obvious the player is inside the mech.
  • The mech now explicitly tells you how to use new abilities.
  • New sprite for the gun to make it more obvious it's not a pickup.
  • Ability sprites now rotate to indicate the direction they'll fire in when used.
  • Denial sound and visual when trying to use an ability in the center room position.
  • The battery collection cutscene only switches to the pilot to show the new room the first time it plays.
  • Adjusted the player's bullet hitbox to be larger for enemies.
  • The Yeem enemy (the one with legs) now takes only 5 hits to kill instead of 10.

Other Adjustments and Bug Fixes:

  • A few room layouts have been adjusted to reduce frustration.
  • Gom (red enemy) and Grom (green enemy) no longer can accidentally walk off a ledge and be stuck in the air.
  • Pausing no longer pauses the music, so you can adjust the music volume in the pause options.
  • Added confirmation of destructive action when quitting the game.
  • Added more "oomph" to some visual effects.
  • Added ability to skip the credits.
  • Centered the logo on the title screen and credits.
  • A few other things I either forgot or are too trivial to note.

If you want the original game as it was released for the game jam for posterity, that release is also still included for download.
